Fabric Collages
This series of collages explores the use of fabrics, threads, laces, paper, and other related materials to express feelings and ideas that have long captured my imagination and creative energy. As a sewer, I am naturally drawn to various textiles and fibers because of their sensuous qualities—their colors, designs, textures, and the way they drape or hang around figures. I have discovered a way to reinvent their appearances by stitching over their surfaces countless times.
Many of the collages are inspired by marine life, particularly the denizens of the coral reefs, a truly magical world. I’ve always been captivated by photographs and aquarium displays of these creatures, but seeing them in tropical waters in my native country years ago deepened my sense of wonder and fascination. I was especially taken by the intensity and luminescence of their colors, as well as the unusual shapes of some of the animals.
Most of my collages are imaginative reconfigurations of these life forms, capturing both their physicality and the energy of their movements. Playfully creating ambiguous and suggestive shapes is a process I find both challenging and enjoyable.
