2015 art exhibit
The art exhibition INTERSECTIONs, (April 17 to May 16) at
the Cultural Arts Center, (139 West Main St. ,Columbus, OH)
of Gahanna resident Lewanda Lim, offers a rare glimpse into the multi-faceted works of this Filipino-American artist. It is a two-part show of two distinct styles that are separated bythe materials and subject matters the artist uses. Both however, intersect at a common artistic and philosophical motivation which can be easily inferred from the array of works.
The first part, Telling Our Story is a visual narrative and intense commentary on the history of the Philippines and Filipino immigration to America. The first piece introduces us to the racial and cultural profile of Filipinos or Pinoys, known to many as doctors ,nurses, teachers, engineers, nannies, mail-order brides and others. Yet their historical background and enduring ties to the U.S. are rarely, if ever, understood in broader contexts. The background of western colonization is described in visually compact and arresting ways in two early works. Experiences of early and later immigrants are equally portrayed through her own interpretive prism. The artist, in her own unique way invites us to dwell on the many-layered experiences of an Asian minority, naturally and perennially attracted to join the multitudes drawn to this great and inclusive nation.
The second part, Fabrics Reconsidered, is a large collection of collages made with fabrics, yarns and other materials. She developed her own technique of creating vibrant compositions using a sewing machine to "encase" mostly abstracted forms and shapes by running her machine over the surface zillions of times. The result is an interestingly new texture and a unified field. Her recent works are large and imposing. They reflect her growing concern about the environment. Her not -so- subtle references to certain ecological problems are painstakingly described in fabric, fiber and stitch. She hopes that the starkness of the topics is mitigated by the aesthetic pleasure the pieces offer.
